Step 3. Restoring settings/files
From the saved files or using the Sync Center. The recommended option is to manually restore only the needed files because some unwanted old settings/files may not be required.
Step 4. Installing essential programs
Installing newer versions is always an big improvement. The following programs I consider helpful:

LooxLight provides controls for leds of: keyboard, wifi, bluetooth, gps, power. You can keep each led in its individual state. LooxLight can be set to continuosly keep led in ON/OFF state or just temporarily switch led to a desired state.
